What Is the Difference Between Herniated Disc , Bulging Disc & a Pinched Nerve?

Getting an Accurate Diagnosis for Your Back Pain from our Santa Barbara ChiropractorOur Santa Barbara chiropractor can determine if the cause of your back pain is coming from bulging discs, herniated discs & pinched nerves

Back pain can be caused by herniated discs, bulging discs or from pinched nerves. Our Santa Barbara chiropractor can determine the cause of your back pain and devise a treatment program to help your body heal.

Bulging Discs

A bulging disc occurs when the inner disc material starts to push against the outer portion of the disc without breaking through the outer edge of the disc. This can put pressure on the nerve roots and surrounding soft tissues, causing pain and loss of mobility.

Herniated Discs

A herniated disc occurs when the inner disc material breaks through the outer later. The material can break through as a continuous section or as a fragment or the disc material. Like a bulging disc, a herniated disc can cause pain when it presses against the surrounding soft tissues and nerves.

Pinched Nerves

When a nerve gets compressed from a nearby soft tissue, bulging or herniated disc or bone spur, it’s called a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves cause localized pain around the nerve as well as radiating pain into the extremities.

Treatments for Bulging and Herniated Discs and Pinched Nerves from our Santa Barbara Chiropractor

Treatment for bulging and herniated discs, as well as pinched nerves, starts with a thorough physical examination from our Santa Barbara chiropractor. Our chiropractor will want to know when the pain started and if any activity increases or decreases the pain. In some instances our chiropractor may also request x-rays or an MRI in order to get a clearer view of your spine.

Once the severity and location of your back injury is known, our chiropractor will create an individualized treatment plan to reduce your symptoms, help your body heal and help you avoid future injuries. Some of our treatment options include spinal adjustments, trigger point therapy and cold laser therapy.
