Myofascial Release

The fascia tissue in your body surrounds and supports the muscles and organs. Accidents or illnesses can cause this thin, connective tissue to tighten and become stiff. Myofascial release is a form of manual therapy that is used to address trigger points and subsequently "release" the tissue allowing it to relax and regain its flexibility.

Conditions that Benefit from Myofascial Release

Injuries that involve internal bruising, venous insufficiency, fibromyalgia, and long periods of inactivity may all impact the function of the fascia throughout the body. If blood flow is reduced to the fascia, it may start to stiffen and lose flexibility. Exercise and regular mobility are what keep the fascia supple and resilient. The tighter the fascia becomes, the more your mobility will begin to be restricted. The resulting pain is normally focused along specific points throughout the affected area. These are known as trigger points.

Myofascial Release and Massage Therapy

Myofascial release involves placing pressure on these specific points for short periods of time.  The most effective way to use myofascial release is during a deep tissue massage. During the massage, pressure is applied to the trigger points to release the tension in the fascia. After the pressure is released, the deep tissue massage helps to disperse the tension throughout the surrounding tissues. This improves blood flow to the area and improves overall flexibility.

Chiropractic Care and Its Benefits

Chiropractic care, myofascial release, and deep tissue massage all work together to maintain flexibility and maintain strength throughout the musculoskeletal systems in the body. Deep tissue massage and myofascial release techniques support mobility and maintain the flexibility it needs to function efficiently. The benefits of these two modalities enhance and accentuate the benefits offered by chiropractic care. Stronger muscles and connective tissues work to maintain the balance that chiropractic adjustments restore in the body.
