Proper Ergonomics for Working from Home

Proper Ergonomics for Working from Home

As more and more people result to remote working, you need to set up your home to be comfortable enough to work for long hours. Otherwise, incorrect posture when working may cause numerous aches and pains that compromise your health down the road. At Advanced Chiropractic Group, we treat injuries due to poor ergonomics, but we educate our patients on proper techniques to avoid work-related injuries in the future.

Below are tips for proper ergonomics at home:

  • Use a good chair: A comfortable chair provides proper support to the spine, preventing back issues. If you are using a typical dining chair, place a pillow behind it to avoid straining your back.
  • Support your feet: Your feet should be firmly grounded on the ground. If the chair is raised, place a step underneath to support your legs. Your legs should always be at an angle of about 90 degrees.
  • Position your screen: Your computer screen should be almost the same level as your eyes. This prevents you from straining your neck when typing or scrolling through your computer. Plus, don't position the screen too close to your eyes. Place it at least an arm's length away.
  • Practice proper posture: You may have an ideal workstation, but if your posture isn't correct, you won't avoid aches and pains because of poor ergonomics. Keep your back straight and always support your back. Avoid leaning forward as this puts pressure on your neck and shoulders.
  • Take breaks: Sometimes, you can be immersed in your work and forget to take breaks. Remember to stand and move around at least once per hour. This eliminates eye strain and joint stiffness. Furthermore, don't forget to keep your body well hydrated.

If the home office isn't ergonomically optimized, you will likely experience never-ending shoulder, back, and neck pain. Plus, poor ergonomics affects your productivity and mental state.
